Mobs in the day? Empty Mobs in the day?

I was playing earlier, and I saw there were some mobs still out (2 spiders and one creeper) The spiders weren't attacking me. But when i walked up to the creeper.. Boom.

Why weren't they dying in the day?

Notch said only the undead die in the day. Spiders do not attack during the day, but when shrouded in darkness they turn upon you. The only undead mobs are the zombies and skeletons, so creepers and spiders still roam until they die of old age.
